The Biden Administration begins with most of HHS in caretaker mode during what could be a relatively long interim leadership period.

Only two operating agencies with HHS have permanent leaders who will serve under Biden: the National Institutes of Health, where Director Francis Collins has been asked to stay on in the role; and the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, where former Harvard/Mass General infectious disease expert Rochelle Walensky took over January 20 in a post that does not require Senate confirmation.
