ACRO Residents
Drs. Shilpen Patel and Shane Hopkins are the Moderators of the Resident Discussion Group.
ACRO Resident List Serve Purpose
Residents in radiation oncology form a small nation-wide community that needs better communication. Everyone knows a smattering of other residents - some you met on the interview trail, some you see at national meetings, etc., but there are really very few opportunities to interact with other residents. The America College of Radiation Oncology has created this resident list serve to provide an open forum for residents to discuss issues relevant to the training and practice of radiation medicine. Hopefully, this will be a way to connect outside of the occasional conference or meeting.
This list serve will allow residents to communicate with one another openly about any topic of general interest to radiation residents. While there are existing bulletins and news blasts that make announcements, this list allows a dialog so that the discussion can keep on going, and this expanded dialog fills a long-standing need. Wondering about an away rotation? Ask for the opinion of those who have been there. Looking for a good radiological anatomy text? Ask for recommendations. Have a great website to share to prepare for boards? Let everyone know. Travel help. Links to resources. Etc.
Etiquette and Organization
Most residents are pretty familiar with computers, so you can skip this part if you're a whiz. However, sometimes people get frustrated with e-mail subscriptions because the volume of messages can be erratic and occasionally excessive. E-mail programs will organize your messages with filters, labels, folders, and rules that can make it so all the information is waiting for you in the place you want it when you're ready for it. You'll find detailed instructions in the help menu of your e-mail client software, but Gmail is a good free option for this sort of thing and provides one example of how to do organize. Here's how to set Gmail up to filter your messages:
- click "create a filter" near the search button at the top of your Gmail screen
- type "residents@acro" in the To field and click Next Step>>
- check the box for "skip the inbox" if you want your messages tucked away to the side rather than clogging your normal message flow
- check the box for "apply the label:" and choose "new label" from the drop down
- name the label "ACRO residents" and click Create Filter Now your messages will be waiting for you down on the left sidebar under the ACRO residents label.
FYI, you can also choose to receive a daily digest rather than individual e-mails. We're all about accommodation.
